Experience Legendary Fishing in Louisiana

Fishing in Louisiana has a certain folklore to it. As your boat drifts silently along a shady bayou, it seems as though you have nature all to yourself. Exotic-looking birds tiptoe in the shallows, looking for a meal. Along the banks, critters hustle through the leaves. Suddenly, a tug at the line bends your fishing pole and you feel that familiar thrill. You begin turning the reel and the battle is on.

Braided with thousands of acres of productive waterways,  Louisiana is legendary fishing territory. The state's bayous, rivers, lakes, reservoirs and estuaries are a freshwater paradise. Pick your spot just about anywhere in the state, and soon you'll understand why locals say that the fish are always biting in Louisiana.

In central Louisiana, visit sprawling Toledo Bend Reservoir right along the Texas boundary. Bassmaster recently named it the top lake in the nation for bass fishing. South Louisiana State Parks Bayou Segnette, Chicot, Lake Fausse Pointe and Palmetto Island offer excellent fishing as well as non-fishing recreation such as hiking, paddling and birding. Also in the southern part of the boot-shaped state, the extraordinary Atchafalaya Basin absorbs about one-third of the Mississippi River's waterflow. It's known as crawfishing country, but dozens of fish species—including the Louisiana standbys of bass, white perch, also known as crappie, and catfish—crowd its waters. Farther north, discover the allure of the Red and the Ouachita rivers, which cut through the green hills near Shreveport and Monroe and are revered for their big bass and catfish.

Consider this your invitation to visit Louisiana's fishing holes and learn why Louisiana is the Sportsman's Paradise. Check the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries' website at FishLA.org for information on licenses and limits and visit Fishing.LouisianaTravel.com for getaway ideas.
