You’ve heard of farm-to-table—restaurants sourcing local ingredients—but what about farm-to-bar? Louisiana excels at both. Throughout the state is a thriving libation industry crafting local beers, liquors and wine from ingredients grown in Louisiana soil.
Louisiana is the happy host to 16 breweries and many glean inspiration and ingredients from local crops. Covington Brewery and Abita Brewery, both of New Orleans’ neighbor on the Northshore, offer strawberry beers—seasonal favorites for which aficionados impatiently wait each spring. Tin Roof’s Watermelon Wheat, brewed in Baton Rouge, is a sweet summertime sip. Parish Brewing Company’s wheat ale is brewed with Steen’s Cane Syrup from nearby Abbeville and 40 Arpent Brewing Co. in Arabi seasonally brews a Louisiana-grown Red Bean and Rice Ale in honor of the traditional Monday meal.
Aficionados will appreciate Louisiana Spirits in Lacassine, the largest privately-owned rum distillery in the country. Sitting inside thousands of acres of cane fields east of Lake Charles, it produces the award-winning Bayou Rum. Celebration Distillation also produces Old New Orleans rum with Louisiana sugar, as does Donner-Peltier Distillers in Thibodaux that additionally sources Louisiana rice to create high-quality vodkas. The New Orleans-based Atelier Vie uses Louisiana-grown rice to makes its RIZ whiskey.
For wine enthusiasts, Louisiana vineyards offer unique Southern twists. Sweet, robust muscadine grapes are adapted to hot, humid climates and Feliciana Cellars in Jackson uses them to produce seasonal varieties you can enjoy in its Spanish villa’s tasting room. Bush’s Pontchartrain Vineyards hosts a popular concert series to soundtrack its local vintages and in West Monroe, you can stomp those grapes at Landry Vineyards during its summertime harvest.
Most of these establishments are open for tours and tastings. Learn more at Libations.LouisianaTravel.com and be on the lookout for these local libations in Louisiana bars and restaurants. Cheers!
