So much of the world’s music began in Louisiana and the state’s festivals celebrate music of all genres. With so many choices, there’s sure to be a fest to get your toes tapping.
To suit all tastes, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is two weekends of big-name musical performers. This spring, Pearl Jam, Snoop Dogg, Paul Simon and Nick Jonas are among the hundreds of performers. Lafayette’s Festival International, a free festival taking over the city in April, brings in international musicians as well as an impressive arts market. New Orleans’ French Quarter Fest, another free festival in April, is popular with locals and tourists alike.
Bayou Country Superfest in Baton Rouge will be headlined by Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan and Eric Church throughout Memorial Day weekend. This year’s Baton Rouge Blues Fest is expanding to a full weekend of music downtown this spring. For hip-hop and rhythm and blues fans, the ESSENCE Festival in New Orleans draws big names to the Superdome every summer. In April, the Natchitoches Jazz and R&B Festival plays along the beautiful Cane River.
Louisiana festivals are already no-where-else experiences; add even more authenticity by celebrating the state’s native music. This year, check out the Cajun Music and Food Festival in Lake Charles, the Festivals Acadiens et Créoles in Lafayette, the Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco Festival in New Orleans, the Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival in Plaisance and the Mamou Cajun Music Festival in central Louisiana. Every August, the Satchmo SummerFest in New Orleans jazzily celebrates its namesake and native son Louis Armstrong.
This is just a sampling of the music celebrations in the state—remember that most Louisiana festivals have live music—and they won’t disappoint. Visit LouisianaTravel.com to plan your musical pilgrimage.
